A calibration certificate is a statement of the results of a calibration performed on a specific instrument or system. Certificates of calibration provide proof that test and measurement equipment has been calibrated. In this certificate, you will find information about the instrument’s performance, condition, and accuracy. You must review, understand, and apply this information as needed. To make qualified risk-based decisions, it is essential to understand the content of the calibration certificate. Failing to understand the full scope of the information supplied in a calibration certificate can lead to costly mistakes, including non-conformances from external assessors.

Calibration laboratory clients who need help understanding technical terminology within certificates can benefit from this course. Additionally, the content of a calibration certificate can serve as a critical indicator of the quality of a calibration provider. The knowledge gained from this course will assist companies in selecting, evaluating (including auditing) and approving calibration laboratories, as well as providing their staff with the confidence to liaise with calibration laboratory staff.

What's covered?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

This course will cover:

  • Purpose of a calibration certificate
  • Reason for variation in the content of calibration certificates issued from an ISO 9001 certified laboratory, an Original Equipment Manufacturer and an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • Content of calibration certificates as required by ISO 17025 and the essential parts of a calibration certificate that we need to understand.
  • Overview of technical content, including metrological traceability, calibration standards, measurement uncertainty, expanded uncertainty, as found/as left data, correction factors, coverage factors, confidence intervals, opinions and interpretations, statements of conformity.
  • Practical review of sample calibration certificates (it is helpful to request course customisation to include your calibration certificates)
  • How to determine calibration intervals for your equipment.
  • Guidance on auditing Laboratory Technical Competency for ensuring Validity of Results

Who should participate?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

Anyone who requires an understanding of (1) How to interpret and understand calibration certificates and (2) Assessing calibration laboratory competence - including personnel from the following areas;

  • Quality & Regulatory
  • Production
  • Calibration & Maintenance
  • Design and Development
  • Supply Chain

What will I learn?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

Participants achieve the following learning outcomes from the programme;

  • The meaning and significance of Laboratory Accreditation – what to do if you cannot source an accredited laboratory.
  • Understand the terminology used in calibration certificates.
  • Understand how to review the results and the reported uncertainty against applicable standards and technical product requirements. Actions to take.
  • How to discuss the calibration results with a customer or external assessor.
  • Improved competency in selecting, evaluating, monitoring and reevaluating calibration laboratories.
  • Confidence to converse with calibration laboratory staff using technical terminology applicable to their role. This is beneficial when auditing laboratories.

Who are the tutors?

How do we train and support you?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

The Tutor is experienced in auditing against the requirements of ISO 17025:2017 and in supporting laboratories and end users across the life science sector and will share experiences to support understanding.

The interactive training programme applies different training methods and styles to effectively deliver key messages, including discussions, group activities and demonstrations.

The training includes a pre course work quiz with answers and this encourages the trainee to focus on the topic to be covered. This course includes an end-of-course assessment. Attendees can avail of a certificate of attendance and a certificate of assessment, which can provide helpful evidence of competency.

The course will include a calibration certificate checklist, which is useful when evaluating, selecting, and agreeing on a contract with a calibration provider, and a checklist for auditing a calibration laboratory's technical requirements.

Note - the SQT training course on Understanding and Interpretation of Test Reports from Testing Laboratories has a slight overlap.  Clients booking both courses may opt to combine them into one and a half days.

In-Company courses – Clients are advised to discuss the requirements with the tutor. They are strongly encouraged to share samples of their calibration reports for inclusion in the customised course material. Practical exercises can be carried out where appropriate using your calibration certificates.
