The NEBOSH International Diploma for Occupational Health & Safety Professionals is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH International General Certificate. It is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding required for undertaking a career as a health and safety professional and it also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.

The qualification deliberately looks at general workplace issues so that is can be applied in the many different sectors in which health and safety professionals may work.

The learning approach for this course is Supported Distance Learning. Supported Distance Learning is ideal for those who require some degree of face-to-face interaction whilst retaining the flexibility offered by distance learning, Supported Distance Learning enables you to:

  • Interact regularly with your tutor and fellow students.
  • Benefit from a structured programme of study with clear goals and deadlines
  • Plan your home studies to best suit your commitments.

The International Diploma course syllabus covers International legal frameworks and codes of practice but our SQT course also covers some Irish legislation. Other centres run the National Diploma which is based on UK legislation.

Who should participate?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

The NEBOSH International Diploma is designed for health and safety professionals who require a high degree of managerial and technical competence to advise on effective management of risk across the range of employment sectors.

There are no barriers to entry to the NEBOSH International Diploma programme.  However, the syllabus assumes the broad basic knowledge of health and safety that is provided by a qualification in Occupational Safety and Health, in particular the NEBOSH International General Certificate. Given the demands of diploma study, the time commitment required and the complementary nature of the NEBOSH International Certificate (IGC) and International Diploma, the achievement of the NEBOSH International General Certificate or direct equivalent prior to undertaking the Diploma course is highly recommended.

To ensure that learners will have this prior learning, it is strongly recommended that learners achieve the IGC or equivalent qualification prior to undertaking the Diploma course. However, NEBOSH do not want this to be a barrier so learners may also be assessed for prior learning in some other way such as through a diagnostic questionnaire to establish broad topic understanding.

The results of this could then inform a recommendation as to whether to proceed directly to Diploma study (albeit with additional support and self-study to fill small knowledge gaps) or whether to take the IGC first.

Delegates will be asked to complete the pre-course application form to demonstrate prior learning and experience.

For applicants, whose first language is not English, NEBOSH recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent). It is important to note that learners are not expected to have an IELTS or equivalent examination complete. Potential delegates are expected to self-assess their English language competency against the IELTS Band scores which can be found in this document.

What will I learn?

There are 10 learning outcomes for the programme, and these will be outlined in the new syllabus guide for the qualification.

What are the entry requirements?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

The NEBOSH International Diploma syllabus assumes that learners will have knowledge of health and safety equivalent to that provided by the NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC).

Many learners embark on the International Diploma already having gained health and safety knowledge either through previous study of the IGC, or a similar qualification. To avoid unnecessary duplication, increase value and provide progression for learners, the July 2020 specification of the International Diploma excludes much of the content that is already adequately covered in the IGC (this is classed as prior learning).

Delegates will be asked to complete a pre-course application form to demonstrate prior learning and experience.

How will I be assessed?

Expand/Collapse Expand/Collapse

Traditional written examinations have been replaced by Case Studies and an Assignment which are submitted to NEBOSH by the learner via on online assessment platform. Application and integration of knowledge is key, and the new assessments emphasise this by asking learners to complete a range of tasks required by professionals in the workplace. Information regarding digital assessment is available here.

The course is assessed as follows:

  • Unit ID1: Assignment (workplace-based tasks together with simulations and reflective statements)
  • Unit ID2: Case Study (Simulation only)
  • Unit ID3: Case Study (Simulation only)

The NEBOSH International Diploma has been designed to be at the same level as the NEBOSH National Diploma which is rated at level 10 on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). The Irish awarding bodies and qualifications authorities and the UK awarding, and qualifications regulatory bodies undertook an exercise to facilitate the comparison of qualifications in the qualification’s framework in the UK and Ireland. The document, Qualifications can cross boundaries - a rough guide to comparing qualifications in the UK and Ireland was published and compares SCQF Level 10 to Level 8 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications. In addition, there is a recently launched European-wide website, which supports this comparison of different national education.

Diploma students need to enrol with NEBOSH. Students have 5 years from date of enrolment with NEBOSH to successfully complete all units. Enrolment forms and instructions to enrol will be issued to all delegates. Diploma students need to register with a NEBOSH approved centre to sit their exams. (SQT is a NEBOSH Approved Centre 551).
